2. How do graduated compression products work?

3. How is a compression product made?
Graduated compression hosiery is characterized, compared to non-compression hosiery, by the decreasing pressure it exerts on the legs, from the ankle upwards; this pressure is calibrated, in the production phase, by specific tests and experimental measurements carried out on production samples (study prototypes and sampling).
In summary these are the steps for the construction of a pantyhose - or mutatis mutandis of another compression product:
- On input from the sales department, the production technicians, thanks to their know-how, research the yarns and program the circular looms to develop prototypes that meet the specific requests - for example a pantyhose with graduated compression 13-17 mmHg (we omitted, to simplify, other specifications that could be requested at the same time, such as the type of plain mesh or net);
- The prototype undergoes all the processes following the actual weaving - stitching, dyeing, ... - until it is finished;
- The finished prototype is tested by HATRA machine; this machine measures the pressure exerted, in our case by the pantyhose, in the various points of the leg;
- If the prototype passes this test, or if the test results coincide, within a tolerance range, with those initially requested, a small quantity is produced which will also be tested;
- If even the products of this small initial production pass the HATRA test, the production specifications will be recorded in the company database of the weaving department, and the new product, with its specifications, will be entered in the company catalogue.
4. When should they be worn?
As long as possible, during the day, to support the legs and promote circulation. In particular for those who are forced to stay still, for example while travelling, or on their feet for a long time, wearing graduated compression products from the morning helps to prevent the feeling of tiredness and annoying swelling in the legs.
5. But can they be seen once worn that they have graduated compression?

6. What are denier and mmHg?
Denier is an international unit of measurement which expresses the weight in grams of 9000 meters of yarn, the average length of the thread that makes up the tights: the higher the denier, the thicker the yarn the tights are woven from and the more the pantyhose itself is heavy. Denier is consequently also one of the main factors that determine transparency on the leg of the product, in addition to the knit and composition of the yarn itself: a 140 denier pantyhose will have a lower transparency effect than a 70 one, for example.
The mmHg is instead an international unit of measure which quantifies the pressure exerted by the sock on the leg, and corresponds to the pressure developed by a one millimeter high column of mercury. On the basis of the compression (pressure) values, the standards of compression stockings are identified, represented by the classes: CLASS 1 (CCL1) corresponding to a compression between 18-21 mmHg, CLASS 2 (CCL2) corresponding to one between 23-32 mmHg, class CLASS 3 (CCL3) between 34-46 mmHg, CLASS 4 (CCL4) above 49 mmHg.
